DTD Radius Arms for Mercedes G-class W463 with Lift Kit

Description

DTD Radius Arms for Mercedes G-class W463 with Lift Kit

– Steel Construction
– Mercedes OEM Bushings Included
– Radius Arms, also known as Control Arms, change the steering angle to restore Caster

OVERVIEW

1.  What is caster and why does it matter?
The correct caster angle will keep the vehicle from wandering at speed and provides steering wheel return. It’s more complicated than this, but for simplicity, looking at your wheels, picture a vertical access through the center of the wheel at 0 degrees. Typically, the wheel is angled back, but as you lift the car, the wheel begins to angle forward. With too little caster, your steering will lose the ability to self-center, affecting vehicle stability in a straight line. In turn, you may find yourself constantly “steering” to keep the vehicle straight. Excessive caster also makes the steering heavy and less responsive — and with larger, heavier tires, the issue is compounded. With the caster correcting, the vehicle will be able to self-center once again, improving stability in a straight line, and reducing the car’s tendency to wander.

2.  Why do you lose caster when you raise the vehicle?
On a radius arm suspension, as you lift the vehicle with a suspension lift, the caster changes — relative to the amount of lift — since the axle is fixed to the radius arm. The only way to correct the problem is to change the angle of the radius arms. You can see the stock arm next to the DTD Radius Arm here:

3.  What are the problems associated with a loss of caster/negative caster on the G-class?
Negative effects of poor caster angle are wandering steering, tire wear, straight-line instability, and no steering wheel return (i.e., steering does not self-center). While driving at higher speeds, the vehicle will have a tendency to oversteer.

4.  What has DTD done to solve this problem?
DTD has redesigned the radius arms to correct caster angle. The product is made from cold-rolled steel that is CNC water jet cut for precision and MIG welded (and TIG welded in crucial areas). The threaded insert is CNC machined from 8620 steel and then heat treated after welding.
