OLD MAN EMU (OME) USPENSION SYSTEMS:
Engineering aftermarket 4WD suspension is extremely complex. Determining the right solution for your vehicle and your requirements demands special attention to many factors. Unlike numerous aftermarket suspension systems, which are only available in a single configuration targeting lift height, Old Man Emu offers a range of tuned and matched integrated suspension systems to ensure the right suspension is available to suit how the vehicle is outfitted and the conditions it will encounter.
DESIGN & DEVELOPMENT:
The Old Man Emu suspension engineers’ objective was to develop an integrated suspension system for the Mercedes G Wagon. The key areas that were considered were lift, load carrying and comfort. After test driving the original suspension set up it was noted the ride characteristics were very controlled giving a sporty feel, however when larger bumps were encountered bump stop engagement was frequent. In general, the ride was considered quite firm. A 50mm lift was targeted as this improves not only ground clearance but increased suspension travel. This allows more scope for shock tuning and resulted in a more compliant comfortable ride while maintaining excellent control.
Springs: To maintain good vehicle control a significant spring rate increase over the OE was developed. 2 spring options were chosen to cater for vehicles with and without accessories or vehicles with different engine configurations.
Shock Absorbers: A development, tuning, and testing project was undertaken to correctly match the ride quality to the spring rate. A longer travel shock was developed and tuned which has resulted in a more comfortable ride while maintaining excellent control in all driving conditions.
Springs: A tapered wire progressive rate spring was developed to fulfill a supple and comfortable ride when the vehicle is empty but also have the ability to carry loads. This progressive rate spring will cater to vehicles that require optimized ride quality but also occasionally carries load.
Shock Absorbers: A longer travel shock was tuned to match the rear coil to provide comfort, control and increased travel.

We also added a spacer kit to give more clearance on the inside at full lock, while moving the wheels out flush with the fender arches. No rubbing, no codes. The kit includes 50 mm spring spacers to be used in conjunction with the ARB springs and OME shocks. The spring spacers are specially designed and molded from a polyurethane elastomeric material in a multi cavity mold for a modest lift, while reducing noise, vibrations and harmonics (NVH) levels. These Spring Spacers are vehicle specific made for the Mercedes-Benz W460, W461 & W463 G-class.
If you are going to actually off-road the vehicle, and you’re not just after the G500 4×4 look or the 6×6 AMG look, then this might not be the best set up for you. While you will maintain the same upward travel, you will loose 2 inches of droop. In that case, you can order our KING Shocks with 2-inch longer bodies or shafts to match the added height from the spring spacers.
Optional Parts (not included in this kit)
When lifting the vehicle, geometry is change and caster may be greatly affected, and the position of the axle may change. To correct these issues, DTD has developed an Adjustable Panhard Bar and all-new Radius Arms. GwagenParts.com also recommends the KING Steering Stabilizer Shock if you are running larger/wider tires.
