2024 Mercedes-Benz G-Class Returns with Striking Upgrades and Elevated Pricing

The 2024 Mercedes-Benz G-Class is making a triumphant return to the market after a two-year hiatus in Australia. However, this time around, the price tag for the luxury off-roader has skyrocketed, signaling a shift in the premium SUV landscape. Enthusiasts eager to own the AMG-tuned G-Class will need to dig deeper into their pockets, as the price of the V8-powered G63 has surged to $363,561 before factoring in on-road costs. This represents a stark contrast to its price of $298,876 when order books were last open in September 2021, marking an increase of $64,685. Notably, this new pricing also stands significantly higher than the cost of the G-Class’ second-generation model, which debuted locally in 2018 starting at $247,700.

This elevated price point catapults the 2024 G63 into a new realm of exclusivity, securing its position as Australia’s most expensive luxury off-roader with a ladder-frame chassis. It leaves contenders like the Lexus LX600 Ultra Luxury, priced at $213,561, trailing in its opulent wake. Even performance-oriented off-road SUVs such as the Land Rover Defender 130 P500, starting from $240,270, find themselves overshadowed by the G63’s impressive presence.

Beneath the hood, the G63 houses AMG’s revered 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged petrol V8 powerhouse. Generating a robust 430kW of power and an impressive 850Nm of torque, this muscular engine channels its might to all four wheels through a nine-speed automatic transmission. As a result, the 2560kg SUV demonstrates a blistering 0-100km/h acceleration in a mere 4.5 seconds, rivaling the performance of agile hot hatches.

Comparatively, the Land Rover Defender 130 P500 boasts a 5.0-liter V8 engine that delivers 368kW of power and 610Nm of torque. Meanwhile, the Lexus LX600 relies on a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 to produce 305kW of power and 650Nm of torque. The G63’s remarkable specifications further underline its prowess in the luxury SUV market.

Excitingly, customers who act swiftly can anticipate parking a brand-new G63 in their driveway as early as November this year. The two-year backlog, resulting from disruptions caused by the pandemic and semiconductor shortages, has been successfully addressed by Mercedes-Benz Australia. Previously, the company halted new G-Class orders in September 2021, citing the need to focus on fulfilling existing backorders based on production availability. This strategic move aimed to enhance customer satisfaction amidst challenging supply chain circumstances.

While the G-Class range previously included a diesel-powered G400d variant, indications suggest that this option has now been retired from the lineup. The spotlight firmly rests on the reborn G-Class, a symbol of opulence and performance that has returned to captivate enthusiasts and reaffirm Mercedes-Benz’s stronghold in the luxury SUV realm.
