Mercedes-AMG G 63 4×4 Squared Faces Recall Over Potential Rear Axle Issues

Mercedes-AMG’s formidable G 63 4×4 Squared, known for its off-road prowess, is facing a recall in the US market. The recall affects an estimated 588 units and is prompted by concerns related to the rear axle’s differential housing, which may develop cracks. This issue poses potential safety risks, including the leakage of differential fluid or, in more severe cases, axle failure. The German automaker initiated an investigation in the previous month following an internal test that revealed signs of fracturing on the housing.

Collaborating with Oberaigner Powertrain, the Austrian supplier of the 4×4 Squared’s rear axle, Mercedes is conducting detailed analyses to better understand the extent of the issue. While a remedy is not currently available, the automaker has proactively launched a recall campaign to address every potentially affected vehicle still accessible to the manufacturer. The recall covers both 2022 and 2023 models, with production dates spanning from March 5, 2021, to December 1, 2023.

Owners of the affected G 63 4×4 Squared vehicles will be notified by dealers, and Mercedes-Benz USA (MBUSA) customer assistance will provide guidance. As a precautionary measure, owners will be instructed to park their vehicles until a remedy is developed and implemented. Dealers will conduct inspections, and if needed, loaner vehicles will be offered to affected owners at no cost. The recall notification process is expected to be completed by December 21, with communication to owners extending until February 13, 2024.

The G 63 4×4 Squared, produced by Magna Steyr in Austria, is renowned for its extreme off-road capabilities, featuring portal axles, substantial ground clearance, and a robust build. Boasting 13.8 inches of ground clearance, the off-road beast employs portal axles both front and rear, coupled with independent suspension at the front and a solid axle at the rear. The twin-turbocharged V8 engine, producing 577 horsepower and 627 pound-feet of torque, powers this off-road titan.

The recall sheds light on the intricate challenges faced by automakers in maintaining the reliability and safety of high-performance off-road vehicles. The G 63 4×4 Squared, with its specialized design and components, exemplifies the complexities associated with ensuring the durability of extreme off-road platforms. While recalls are not uncommon in the automotive industry, they underscore the commitment of manufacturers to address potential safety issues promptly.

In the world of off-road enthusiasts, the G 63 4×4 Squared has garnered a reputation for its formidable capabilities, making this recall a notable development. Mercedes-AMG, a brand synonymous with performance, will diligently work to resolve the issue and uphold its commitment to delivering vehicles that meet the highest safety standards, even in the challenging terrain for which the G 63 4×4 Squared is designed.
