We Have More Details About The Electric Mercedes G-Wagen

Work is continuing on the EQG.

Back in 2019, Mercedes-Benz teased that it would eventually transform the iconic G-Wagen into an all-electric off-roader. “There will be a zero-emission #EV version of the #MercedesBenz G-Class. In the past, there were discussions whether we should eliminate the model, the way I see things now, I’d say the last Mercedes to be built will be a G-Class,” said Daimler CEO Ola Kallenius.

Since then, we haven’t heard much about the electric Mercedes-Benz G-Class, but the company did file trademarks for every EQ name ranging from EQA up to EQY, just in case. While Mercedes already owned the “EQG” name for the upcoming G-Class EV, this model’s details are starting to come into clearer focus with more recent trademark filings.

The German automaker was spotted filing for two trademarks on April 1, 2021, with the EUIPO (European Union Intellectual Property Office). These include the names “EQG 560” and “EQG 580,” both of which should go on the upcoming electric G-Class variant. The numbers here are similar to those previously trademarked for the EQS sedan, but they are not the same. There will also be an EQS 580 model as well as an EQS 450, but there is no EQS 560 currently trademarked.

The EQS 580 is expected to arrive sporting a dual electric motor setup combining to produce 469 horsepower and 560 lb-ft of torque. Since the gas-powered G-Class and S-Class have traditionally shared engines, it seems likely that the EQG and EQS will share electric motors. The EQS 560 will likely be a less powerful version, possibly with a different battery size.

Though these trademarks let us know Mercedes is still working on an electric off-roader, it doesn’t mean we will see the EQG any time soon. This model isn’t expected to arrive until 2024 after models like the Rivian R1S and GMC Hummer EV are already on sale. We wouldn’t be shocked if Mercedes eventually introduces an electric AMG G-Class, as the German automaker already trademarked EQS 53, 55, and 63 plus EQE 43, 53, 55, and 63.
