The custom off-roader has been handed a nut-and-bolt restoration.

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class is the oldest hand-built car to be produced today, and with the brand already planning a fully electric variant of the heroic model, this is unlikely to change in the future. Every year, the hard-working experts at the Magna-Steyr plant in Austria put together tens of thousands of models together for the wealthy consumers that can afford them.

Despite the design and development team investing many hours and dollars into ensuring that the G-Class can traverse almost any terrain, a lot of the delivered models never veer off the tarmac. The G-Class is one of the very few 4×4 products that has retained its off-road prowess from the day it was launched, but with the current generation model omitting the solid front axle, it’s not quite as rugged as it used to be. Fortunately, there are other options.

If you’re in the market for a G-Class that is a bit more traditional, the specialists at Expedition Motor Company have put something together that you might appreciate. It’s a new range of resto-modded G-Wagons with a pretty hefty starting price of $120,000. The first of its Wolf offering is based on a 1991 250GD finished in Midnight Blue and took the team over 1,000 hours to restore.

Make no mistake, this 250GD still has the gusto to tackle the wild but EMC also wanted it to be more comfortable in urban driving environments. For those wanting to improve its daily usability, it has included the option of a new five-speed automatic transmission, supplemented by a gear shifter sourced from a Mercedes-Benz S-Class, for the OM602 five-cylinder turbodiesel engine.

This particular model boasts an open-air cabin to give the occupants a pure, classical military-inspired feeling. Comfort is ensured with the inclusion of durable all-weather papyrus-and-navy vinyl upholstery for the seats and an HVAC system with air-conditioning and heating. Keeping it in line with modern car standards, EMC has installed a digital touchscreen infotainment system with various means of connectivity.

To put the 250GD together, the team at EMC stripped the original model down to its shell to rework every component. Upgraded fuel and brake lines and body mounts have been fitted to give the car a newer feel while the original truck axles were included with brand new internal components. For improved stopping, a fresh set of brake calipers were specially designed with stronger rotors and drums. A conclusive rework of the dynamics is provided by upgraded springs and shocks.
