The Mercedes-Benz G65 AMG Has Everything…Except 4×4²-style Portal Axles

So why not add portal axles, some massive fender flares, roof spoiler, and beadlock wheels? Our customer did just that. This Mercedes-Benz G65 AMG was built for Mercedes-Benz of Lindon, now Mercedes-Benz of Draper, and was one of the first portal axle conversions in the U.S. In fact, to our knowledge, it was the first G65 AMG in the world fitted with 4×4 Squared-style portal axles. The portal axle kit provides the width and axle clearance, but to run 37″ tires with the carbon fiber fender flares, we had to install a 2″ lift kit, as well…plus a little more spacing in front to level out the vehicle.

A “little more” was actually 40mm.  That caused a caster issue. So we had to develop new radius arms to increase caster, and therefore tracking and stability at speed. With the new arms installed, caster was back to 4+ degrees and the car handled nicely. After lifting the vehicle, the axles moved out to one side, so we fabricated adjustable panhard/track bars to re-center the axles. A KING 2.0 steering shock was added to help move the heavy beadlock wheels with 37″ tires — about 145 lbs per corner.

The look wouldn’t be complete without the 6×6 AMG/G550 4×4² Roof Spoiler and LEDs. This particular part is made of 100% genuine carbon fiber in the large 4×4² carbon fiber pattern to match the fender flares. The 18″ beadlock wheels and Nitto Ridge Grappler tires give the vehicle off-road capability that the stock 22-inch wheels with modest 55-series tires can’t match.
