2024 Mercedes G-Class Facelift to Integrate Aero Tweaks from EQG for Improved Efficiency

While it’s safe to assume that most Mercedes G-Class buyers prioritize style and performance over fuel consumption, the German luxury SUV is set to receive some aerodynamic enhancements aimed at improving efficiency. The upcoming 2024 G-Class facelift will benefit from lessons learned during the development of the electric EQG variant, with Mercedes promising a “tremendous reduction in fuel consumption.”

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class, renowned for its iconic and boxy design, isn’t the most aerodynamic vehicle on the road. However, the advent of the EQG, the fully electric G-Class, has prompted the brand to explore ways to enhance the SUV’s efficiency. Emmerich Schiller, Managing Director of Mercedes-Benz G GmbH, shared insights about the upcoming changes in an interview with Autocar.

Schiller emphasized that the visual changes to the G-Class would be subtle, and most people wouldn’t readily notice them, even when standing next to the vehicle. However, these subtle adjustments will have a significant impact on aerodynamics, leading to a substantial reduction in fuel consumption.

The aerodynamic improvements will not only benefit the conventional gasoline and diesel-powered G-Class models but will also contribute to the efficiency of the electric EQG variant. The electric G-Class, which is set to be unveiled in early 2024, will feature design elements influenced by the iconic G-Wagen, ensuring it remains instantly recognizable.

The EQG, with its electric powertrain, will serve as a template for implementing aero tweaks in the G-Class facelift. Mercedes aims to make the traditional G-Class more fuel-efficient without compromising its rugged and distinctive appearance. Schiller confirmed that both the internal combustion engine (ICE) and electric versions of the G-Class would receive these aero enhancements in the 2024 facelift.

However, one notable change with the 2024 G-Class facelift is the discontinuation of the V8-powered G500 model. The Final Edition of the G500, introduced in Europe in June, marked the end of this variant’s production. It remains uncertain whether the US-spec G550 will also lose the V8 engine with the mid-cycle update. Nevertheless, Mercedes enthusiasts can hope that the V8 powerplant will continue to be available in the AMG G63 for the foreseeable future.

In conclusion, Mercedes-Benz recognizes the need to address fuel efficiency and aerodynamics even in a vehicle as iconic as the G-Class. While the G-Wagen’s distinctive design is its defining feature, the brand’s commitment to improving efficiency through subtle aero tweaks is a testament to its dedication to innovation and sustainability.
